The Red Cross Tsunami Appeal fundraiser raises £2,400

By | EL BLOG

Well what a party it was!!! The Cuban Brothers, DJ Yoda, The Nextmen all on one night including an awesome dance show by Rogue Elements and a sexy burlesque performance by the one and only Giselle!! Much respect to DJ Will, Bliss and all at The Old Queen’s Head for the smooth operation!

Thank you to everyone who turned up and partied for the cause – we certainly had a good time. Things are still uncertain in Japan but let’s hope our contributions will help to get people’s lives back to normal over there.

If you would like to send donations you can either go to the Red Cross website here or The Nippon Foundation’s website here who were the key helpers in the recovery after Kobe’s huge earthquake in 1995.

Nasimi Beach, Dubai

By | EL BLOG

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar! You know when you hear the call to prayer, you’ve come to a Muslim state and it’s different rules over here. Although hailing as one of the “decadent” party spots of the middle east where the rich and famous come to play, it’s still a Muslim state with some very conservative laws! So we were warned that there was to be absolutely no skin showing and no costumes that would reveal the contours of the body…..

Nasimi beach is the beach bar of the Atlantis resort complex – so big it has an aquarium and a water park as part of the hotel! The gig itself was a fun one joined by some familiar faces we recognised from previous gigs in Dubai. Shout outs to Charl, Smoking Groove and David Craig (Craaaaig David!!!) for the support!

Sheesha-ing away with resident Charl Chaka at Nasimi!

New Year’s Day, Ivy Pool, Sydney

By | EL BLOG

The place to be for the coolest and hippest Sydneyfarians, we returned to the Ivy for a sunset set. Joined by our Dj of Truth, Peruvian Brother and Pacha resident, Cutmaster Deejay Mo’funk we rocked the party to a partly nosed up, not so clued up crowd (loving the “er…. what’s going on lads” faces as we hit the stage) but got them all dancing by the end of the set! A nonsense party of great magnitude. Thanks to the beautiful Sam Nethery for looking after us and respect to Chicago’s James Hurd who played after. Archerio loves you!!! And of course big respect to Justin Hemmes, head Honcho of Jam Music for inviting us. Good luck with Good Vibes!

Incidentally, shout out to, legendary B-boy Poe 1 now residing in Adelaide. Thanks for a great jam in Sydney!

3rd January, Southbound Festival, Busselton

By | EL BLOG

Staying in Busselton bang on the beach, a little village about 3 hours from Perth, we played, our last and arguably our best gig of the Oz tour. Archerio danced amazingly, DJ Mo’funk cut if up nice and fresh, Miguel worked the crowd in a way only the seasoned performer can, and I did my bit…. Perth has the most appreciative and best party crowd in Australia, hands down. Due to the fact that not many international acts make it to the West Coast, Perth’s music fans embrace you like no other place. You got our vote!!

Shout outs to Peaches and Dara J and Family! Good vibes!

And sorry folks our gig was cancelled at the Espy – unforeseen visa circumstances meant we had to leave straight to New Zealand!

Splore City, New Zealand!!

By | EL BLOG

After holidaying in Bali for a couple of weeks we come to the land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa or New Zealand. New Zealand is our second home in a way. Miguel spent some of his youth here and since the first time I came here, I’ve loved the vibe of the place and the feeling I get – it feels like home away from home.
New Zealand has a very serious music scene. Julien Dyne, Isaac Aesili, Ladi6, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Benny Tones, Electric Wire Hustle not to mention the list of up and coming producers and bands, there is a high quality of music here. As always we are joined for the Kiwi gigs by local celebrity and unofficial ambassador of Latin music and culture, Bobbito Brazuka, aka Robertinho Mukai. Working at Conch Records, an Auckland institution, a hub for musicians and first stop for any visiting DJs, he also holds down his residency at Ponsonby Social Club (my favourite Auckland bar) as well as playing in many more. Look out for his new project “Latin Aoteroa” with Bobbito on decks, Isaac Aesili on percussion and horns and MCed by the beautiful Jennifer Zea.

Although I ended up doing some side shows, the main Cuban gigs were at San Francisco Bath House in Wellington and Splore City in Auckland. Run by John Minty, the Splore Festival takes place every other year on a great little beach in a National Park. On the “off” years John has put on something a little smaller in the city and here is where we find ourselves!

Taking place in Auckland City Hall, the Friday night was headlined by Kelis. Saturday saw Mayer Hawthorne (great show!! The boy can sing!), Belleruche and us lot! Another great vibe and fun times. It’s great to be back!
