3rd January, Southbound Festival, Busselton

By | EL BLOG

Staying in Busselton bang on the beach, a little village about 3 hours from Perth, we played, our last and arguably our best gig of the Oz tour. Archerio danced amazingly, DJ Mo’funk cut if up nice and fresh, Miguel worked the crowd in a way only the seasoned performer can, and I did my bit…. Perth has the most appreciative and best party crowd in Australia, hands down. Due to the fact that not many international acts make it to the West Coast, Perth’s music fans embrace you like no other place. You got our vote!!

Shout outs to Peaches and Dara J and Family! Good vibes!

And sorry folks our gig was cancelled at the Espy – unforeseen visa circumstances meant we had to leave straight to New Zealand!

Splore City, New Zealand!!

By | EL BLOG

After holidaying in Bali for a couple of weeks we come to the land of the Long White Cloud, Aotearoa or New Zealand. New Zealand is our second home in a way. Miguel spent some of his youth here and since the first time I came here, I’ve loved the vibe of the place and the feeling I get – it feels like home away from home.
New Zealand has a very serious music scene. Julien Dyne, Isaac Aesili, Ladi6, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Benny Tones, Electric Wire Hustle not to mention the list of up and coming producers and bands, there is a high quality of music here. As always we are joined for the Kiwi gigs by local celebrity and unofficial ambassador of Latin music and culture, Bobbito Brazuka, aka Robertinho Mukai. Working at Conch Records, an Auckland institution, a hub for musicians and first stop for any visiting DJs, he also holds down his residency at Ponsonby Social Club (my favourite Auckland bar) as well as playing in many more. Look out for his new project “Latin Aoteroa” with Bobbito on decks, Isaac Aesili on percussion and horns and MCed by the beautiful Jennifer Zea.

Although I ended up doing some side shows, the main Cuban gigs were at San Francisco Bath House in Wellington and Splore City in Auckland. Run by John Minty, the Splore Festival takes place every other year on a great little beach in a National Park. On the “off” years John has put on something a little smaller in the city and here is where we find ourselves!

Taking place in Auckland City Hall, the Friday night was headlined by Kelis. Saturday saw Mayer Hawthorne (great show!! The boy can sing!), Belleruche and us lot! Another great vibe and fun times. It’s great to be back!

Australia Via Hong Kong

Hola friends!
It’s been a while so first of all I’d like to start by wishing everyone a happy new year. I hope that you’ve all had a good holiday.
In the meantime, the Brothers have been busy providing festive entertainment in the Southern Hemisphere!!

After making a pit-stop at the notorious Dragon-i in Hong Kong to party with DJ Gilbert and friends, we spent a good 2 weeks having it off in Australia.
We did a few gigs so I’ll post them by and by! Here was the first!

Christmas Day @ Espy, Melbourne – After spending Christmas Day with my Zulu family in Melbourne (thank you Siney!) we had a great gig! Ever since visiting the venue to see Supernat and Q-Bert perform here in 2009, I’ve always thought it would be perfect for the Bros to play here – a cosy live venue with a great up-for-it crowd! Indeed the gig went down a treat, and certainly one of the most enjoyable gigs we’ve done. Personal highlight  was dropping the Loose Cannons’ edit of Barbara Streisand, which says “Merry Christmas” instead!

New Year’s Eve, Falls Festival, Tasmania

Home of the endangered Tasmanian Devil, great seafood and an underage drinking problem, we were lined up to close the main stage on New Year’s Eve! After Peaches had whipped the crowd into New Year furor, we came out to do our bit! With the last number, Peaches and her band, and then the entire stage crew joined us on stage for a full knees-up and rave up while I took it from house to drum’n’ bass (which I rarely do). Frenzify!!!
After the gig, I was till buzzing from the excitement so went to see the sunrise over the horizon. Happy New Year everybody!!!

Falls Festival, Lorne

Set in the rainforest of Victoria, this reminded us of Bestival! Ran with no corporate sponsorship whatsoever, it’s a great boutique festival this year headlined by Public Enemy! What!!! Yes. Celebrating 25 years of the release of “Fear of a Black Planet” they performed the tunes, and Chuck D still held the crowd with ease and authority. Not sure about Flava Flave’s shout out “Thank you everybody for making me the biggest reality TV star!!!” but the show was great for the old dudes like ourselves. And the kids were having it too singing along “BASS! How low can you go!”. We had the unique privilege of going on after PE (thanks for warming up for us guys) but what was amazing was that Chuck D was on the stage side watching the whole show and gave us mad props after. RESPECT!!

A great little festival by the river underneath a CLIFF!!! We were joined by local breaking crew Elements Collective (crazy skills!!) who repped hard with style, power and finesse. Rocking the hip hop stage with local talent was an honour and a pleasure.

There was a dubstep DJ, DJ Cutloose, who was cooking a pumpkin risotto as he DJed. Great that he’s catering for vegetarians!

It was a big moment to return to the Belvoir Amphitheatre, Dave Grohl’s favourite venue, and certainly one of ours too, after supporting The Scissor Sisters and Arrested Development back in 2006. It was an early afternoon set but we drew the crowd in slowly to create our Cuban Party! It was great to see Beardyman’s unique Beatboxing set. Now, I get bored of beatboxing after 30 secs, but Beardyman has got a great show and rocked it hard. Nice to catch up with old friends Kid Kenobi, Rico Tubbs (our Finnish brother) and Micah too. Headlining the stage were the legendary 2 LIVE CREW – legendary because they DON’T EXIST!!! Always strange to see oldschool legends perform – it can go either way, and this was not in the good direction…

Damien Dempsey’s Dublin

By | EL BLOG | 28,554 Comments

Shows in Dublin are always great because the Dubliners are always up for the party. The 2 gigs this weekend at Dandelion and Button Factory, both great little venues, were no exception – thanks to Jamie and Chris for looking after us!!

While we were there, we checked out an exhibition of Dublin folk musician Damien Dempsey (Damo) and visual artist Maser called “They Are Us”. Located in a warehouse above a chinese grocer’s, Maser pays homage to the sign-writing heritage of Dublin through the lyrics of Damo. His angle is spreading positive messages through street art, as his works usually feature on many walls and street corners in the city. Throughout, you feel his love for the city and his pride to be part of it, which he hopes fellow Dubliners will share.

Abu Dhabi, Grand Prix and Yasalam Festival

By | EL BLOG | 40,707 Comments

It’s not often that you get to go to a festival and over those days, you get to see see Kanye West, Kelis, Linkin Park, Prince and then watch the final F1 Grand Prix of the season from the Ferrari yacht – and have a chauffeur on call 24/7. Such was the case at Yasalam Festival this year, held on Yas Island and at the Corniche in Abu Dhabi.

We rocked a heavy disco set on Friday night at the Corniche beach stage where we played with Fabolous and Lebanese Super star (and I mean SUPER star in the Middle East) Haifaa, after which we were whisked off to Prince playing a secret gig at the Skybar. He was supposed to play for 20 mins but ended up doing 90 mins!!! The man as we all know is a legend! Then the after-after party was at Cipriani’s playing banging techno with old yachting types and young modelly types. Fanny fanny fanny must be fanny in a rich man’s world. There you have it. Awesome.

Satuday was a short set at the Skybar followed by Flo-Rida. Yes the Low Low Low Low guy, followed by more afterparties etc.

Sunday, yes, watching the Grand Prix from the Ferrari yacht and then watching PRINCE and then more after parties…..

Thanks to our driver Prince Sharjan of Bengal for driving us, sometimes at over-capacity, around Abu Dhabi and the legend that is Keith Howison of Flash for looking after us!!!! Hellooooo thereeeee and assalamu alaikum.
